Quinn Cook's biggest competition for best ACC point guard is Notre Dame's Eric Atkins. Atkins is new to the ACC, but is primed for a huge senior season. While Notre Dame may not be as good as Duke, Eric Atkins will have a bigger role for his team (similar to the Wiggins and Parker debate). Eric Atkins likely has the inside track at the first team all-ACC, but Cook will be the exact point guard Duke needs. That leads me to think Quinn Cook will be on the second team.
Unlike at point guard, there will be intense competition for all 3 ACC team spots. Rasheed Sulaimon has very worthy competition from Oliver Hanlan, Jerian Grant, and Joe Harris. Joe Harris was on the first team all-ACC last season and looks prime to make it again. Oliver Hanlan beat out Rasheed Sulaimon for ACC freshman of the year last season. Jerian Grant was on the all-Big East second team last season and looks ready for a big senior year. While all four are extremely talented Joe Harris looks like the best on both sides of the ball. Expect all four to be on all-ACC teams, but Joe Harris to establish himself as the best shooting guard and be on the first team.
Like shooting guard, the small forward spot is very competitive. Rodney Hood will have to deal with tough competition from Dez Wells, CJ Fair, and PJ Hairston. Neither Dez Wells or PJ Hairston made an all-ACC team, but look prime for bigger years this season. CJ Fair made the all-Big East second team last season. Dez Wells does not quite have the talent to stay with the other three players. PJ Hairston has the talent, but his offseason trouble and potential may hold him back. In the end, Fair and Hood will fight for the top spot, and I believe CJ Fair may have the advantage by the smallest bit.
While there are many talented power forwards in the ACC, the top two are Jabari Parker and James Michael McAdoo. They both have completely different styles, which makes them tough to compare. McAdoo looks prime for a breakout junior season but he is not Jabari Parker. Parker is just a freshman but he looks prime to be one of the best in the ACC. James McAdoo will give Parker a run, but Jabari Parker will emerge as the best power forward in the conference.
While there are not many great ACC centers, Amile Jefferson likely will not prove himself as the best. Duke is too talented on the wing for Amile to establish himself. Wake Forest's Devin Thomas and Virginia's Akil Mitchell have the inside track as the best ACC center. This is the one position Duke does not have a good chance at winning.
