Before Countdown to Craziness, I was pretty low on Semi Ojeleye. I did not see Semi Ojeleye as a contributor this season and I was unsure about his future at Duke. Although it was just a scrimmage, seeing him play in certain roles against college competition caused me to change my mind. In the second half of the scrimmage, he was on the team with Parker, Hood, Dawkins, Cook, and Jefferson (starting five?) and looked like he fit right in. He will not be a starter, but I believe he will find his niche this season.
Behind Jabari Parker and Rodney Hood, I believe either Alex Murphy or Semi Ojeleye will emerge as the backup. Alex Murphy should be ready to take the role, but he still looked tentative at Countdown to Craziness. His age should give him the advantage, but he will need to show improvements to take the role. Semi Ojeleye appears to be going the other way and looks ready for the role. Duke may lose shooting and scoring by putting Ojeleye in, but they will not lose any athleticism or defense. After expecting Murphy to be the backup all offseason, I now expect Semi to take it.
In a backup forward role, where Semi will be expected to play defense and run the floor, I expect him to flourish. Duke cannot expect too much from him, but he will be able to do exactly what is asked of him. This bodes well for Semi's future, as his athleticism will allow him to become a solid player at Duke. This is a big difference from what I said a just week ago, but Semi has greatly changed my mind. He will be a valuable reserve this season and could be a starter during his Duke career.
